Q&A: Do you think the majority of online poker tournaments with a guaranteed prize pool use bots filling empty spot?

Question by John Red: Do you think the majority of online poker tournaments with a guaranteed prize pool use bots filling empty spot?
I noticed I never really see guaranteed tournaments anymore with a lower entry pool than the amount of money being guaranteed. I think they put computer bots in those tournaments to make sure they don’t lose money if the number of players doesn’t mean the $ $ $ guarantee.
This means any guaranteed tournament is a joke, they totally eliminate the possibility getting better odds in guaranteed tournaments, also I’ve heard in the past of tournaments just getting canceled at the last minute if there’s no enough players, so much for the term “guaranteed”.
Someone told me that every single poker site no matter how reputable uses bots and they sneak it in their terms and conditions to legally do it.

Most site guarantees are so far on the conservative end based on past metrics of the potential entries there’s never an overlay. Poker stars especially does this with their guarantees. The 5 million 5 year anniversary had something like an 11 or 12 million dollar prize pool. They don’t need or use bots to fill the “empty” spots because there isn’t any empty spots.

The main exceptions would be lesser known sites trying to create some buzz like Bodog. When they have a series of events sometimes with the main event there’s a small overlay.

Question by user: Guaranteed Tournaments in online poker?
I play with UltimateBet, and I want to enter a couple of tournaments tomorrow as I have bene doing fairly good. I noticed they have guaranteed tournaments like 2K or 5K, and they start sunday morning/afternoon, and there is no one signed up yet! Will 200 people or more suddenly sign up, or will it start regardless of how many people sign up? Do the casions just make up the difference and make their money in other ways?

A guaranteed tournament means that the site will ensure a minimum size for the prize pool. The tournament will start regardless of how many people join. If the number of people multiplied by their contribution to the prize pool is less than the guarantee, then the site makes up the difference.
