Question by B.A.Y.: What is the second slot in a casino poker table for?
I played my first casino poker game today, and in addition to the rake box, I noticed another slot in the table to the left of the dealer. Ever hand, she would deposit a chip in this slot. This was not the rake, and I never noticed whether the chip came from the pot or her till. Is this a way to count how many hands have been played at a table, and is this money comming from the pot, or just the dealer’s till?
It’s not the tip box either. I just thought of something. The casino has a bad beat jackpot. I bet it’s for that.

I think what you are describing is a tip box. The dealer is likely to collect tips in a specific place until the total is at least $ 5. The dealer will then color up $ 5 in tips and deposit a $ 5 chip in the tip box.

If it’s a “free roll” then don’t worry about it. Go to have fun!

Other players LOVE the “fishes” as you put it, because they know that those are the people that will give away their money. You won’t be one of the “fishes”, though, because you aren’t playing for real money.

As for tips – Stick to only premium hands if you want to last a long time in the tournament. It’s more boring, but that’s what you’ll need to do to survive.

Premium hands are cards like: A-A, K-K, Q-Q, J-J, A-K, A-Q, and maybe A-J and K-Q. Always being suited makes the hand even more premium.

i’m looking into buying chips however they are advertized as 11.5 grams, 13 grams and 14 grams. what are the official weight of poker chips and where can i find “clay” chips online preferably in Europe?

There is no official weight to chips mate if you want to buy chips try a gaming equipment supplier a quick search will give you hundreds.

Question by Tim M: How does Vegas casino poker work?
Going to Vegas for the first time. Looking forward to playing some hold ‘em. However, I have NO IDEA how it works not the rules of the hand but the buy-ins and pay outs. For EX one of the casino sites say for no limit hold ‘em $ 80 buy in $ 1000 in chips. OK so what does that mean? Obviously they are not going to give me $ 1000 for $ 80.
Just a little confused on how it works. Can you cash out at anytime for games like that? I know sounds dumb but never been to Vegas to play real poker.

$ 80 buy in $ 1000 chips – that’s a tournament. And no – you can’t cash out anytime….gotta win the tournament or at least last long enough to make the money!

Any other cash game – if you buy in for $ 100 they give you $ 100 in chips. And you can leave whenever you want.

They will refer to them as $ 1/$ 2 or $ 2/$ 5 (or much higher!) which is referring to the small blind/big blind structure.

And the cash games can be limit or no-limit.

When you get to the poker room there will be someone you check in with, they will tell you what games are being played and which have open seats.

I’d like to state something that is obvious to many people, but perhaps not to you. These sites were created for ONE REASON ONLY – that is to TAKE your money, not to give you any. You can get the best promotions in the world and you will still end up PAYING them for your entertainment on their site.

If they have the casino’s name on them and the casino is still around then yes. But what you have is just Las Vegas souvenirs not worth very much, if anything.

I’m going to be in Vegas with some friends, maybe 5-8 people. Will a casino provide a dealer if we want to play a small hold ‘em tournament? What about a cash game? Main point is we don’t want random players in the mix.

Yes most places should rent you a table, equipment and a dealer for an hourly rate.

Every brick and mortar casino has slot machines [inspected and regulated by outsiders with no financial interest in casino profits] programmed to simulate physical blackjack and poker play.

Do you folks who evangelize online gambling against computer programs online that might, or mightn’t be regulated experience similar winning when you play casino poker and blackjack machines that you pronounce yourselves to be winning online?

Or is there something about online game programming that’s different when you actually set foot in a casino and reality takes hold?

Never seen a poker slot machine. If you are referring to video poker, then you should know that has nothing in common with playing Hold em against other opponents on-line.

Then again, I’ve never professed to be a professional poker player, so maybe they seen these machines that you are talking about.
