The chips used in North American casinos usually weigh about 10 grams, and are usually between 8 and 10.5 g. There is no official weight, however, and some, particularly coin inlaid chips, can weigh more. Companies that manufacture chips for actual casinos include Paulson (division of GPI), GPI (Gaming Partners International), ASM (Atlantic Standard Moulding), PGI (Palm Gaming International), Blue Chip Co (BCC) and Chipco. Paulson, BCC and ASM produce compression molded clay, Chipco makes ceramics, GPI offers Coin & injection molded designs, & Palm Gaming offers both Ceramic & Clays. Most of these companies produce similar high quality chips for the consumer market as well. Other chips sold for home use may vary substantially in substance, weight & style, sometimes weighing as much as 16g, depending on manufacturer and construction. A very many cheaper plastic coated home game chips are 11.5g, and are often erroneously marketed as “official casino weight” chips.

I’d actually recommend the ones they sell at Walmart. When I bought mine there were two different sets, the regular and the deluxe. The deluxe set ran me $ 18 and has chips that are way nicer than you’d expect. I’m not sure what the exact chip count is, but it’s been able to accommodate 7-8 players.
Anyway an amazon search for “poker set” brings up quite a selection and glancing through it I’m seeing some pretty nice looking sets in the $ 30-40 range if you’re looking for higher quality.
