I was wondering how many players normally qualify for the WSOP Main Event. What is their buy-in, and how many of those players actually receive profit for their play?

666 this year and they all make a profit of varying amounts depending on how long you last after the cut.

  • ZCT:

The only qualification for the Main Event is the ability to put up $10,000 to buy in.

The number of entries varies each year. This year it was 6,844 players, and the top prize is $9,119,517.

They typically pay the top 10% although the exact number varies. But it is usually somewhere around that. I think this year is around 666 players who will at least double their money. Of course, the higher you place, the more you win.
