matey, you’re better off with a proper job. poker is quite “iffy” and you can lose big time if you’re not careful. it’s based on chance and the odds aren’t really in your favor.

The average person loses.
Remember, the poker sites are making a lot of money, that all comes from the players. So add up all the winners and all the losers, and you have a net loss.
Ask her what her screenname and what website. You can look up to see how she’s doing.
Online poker doesn’t make money off of losers. When you lose money at online poker, it goes to the person you lost it too. Poker sites just take a rake or a tourney fee. You don’t play against the house, and the house doesn’t care if you win or lose, because they make money either way.
you have to remember that poker is played against others. So for every million dollars won, there is a million lost. So the average would be zero…technically it is less than zero because the site will take a small amount out of each hand
As others have said, the AVERAGE person LOSES due to the site taking out “rake”. Really good players, however, can make a decent amount of money playing online. It depends on how good your co-worker is. I’ve made roughly $10k since 2005…but it’s not enough to replace my day job, and I am definitely in the minority of people who has made money playing online poker.
Since you’re playing poker against the other players + the rake, there is definately more losers than there are winners.
Of the winners, only a very small percentage would be big winners.
Also, anyone that actually makes a lot of money at poker for a living usually doesn’t brag about it to their workmates.
It only depends on your skill. If you are good you will make lots of money, if no you will lose lots of money.
Some good answers, and like LegFu says get her screenname(s) and which sites, go to sharkscope and you’ll see if she’s telling the truth. There are a helluva lot more losers than winners, a lot of online players i know keep a running tally of their wins but fail to subtract all of their losses when bragging about how good they are.
I can only speak about tournament poker, including SNG games and not ring or cash games. Most tournaments cost about a 10% fee to enter, so you pay $5.50 to enter a tournament and only $5.00 goes to the pot. And tournaments usually only pay about the top 10-15% of the players.
Common estimates put the number of winning online poker tournament players at about 15%. With the 10% making a breakeven to decent amount, the top 4% making a good amount and the top 1% making an obscene amount. More importantly, this also means that 85% of people who try online poker end up losing money.
